Guide for new learners
What happens on your first driving lesson
Everyone is nervous before their first lesson. Here's exactly what to expect, so you can relax and enjoy it.
What to bring
- Your provisional driving licence (the photocard)
- Glasses or contact lenses if you need them to read a number plate from 20 metres
- Comfortable, flat shoes you can feel the pedals in
What you'll do
Dafydd picks you up and drives to a quiet road nearby, usually on an estate in Cwmbran, Pontypool or wherever you live. You'll swap seats and start with the cockpit checks: adjusting the seat and mirrors and putting your seatbelt on. Then you'll learn the controls, how to move off and how to stop safely. Most people are driving slowly along quiet roads within the first hour.
After the lesson
You'll get written feedback in your own pupil app: what went well and what to work on next. Your progress on every skill the driving test looks at builds up lesson by lesson, so you can see how close you are to being test ready.

Questions people ask
Do I need to have passed my theory test?
No. You can start lessons as soon as you have your provisional licence. Many pupils find the theory test easier once they've been on the road.
How long should my first lesson be?
Two hours works well: there's time to settle in, learn the controls and get some real driving done.
What if I'm really nervous?
That's completely normal. First lessons start on quiet roads, and the car has dual controls, so Dafydd can help at any moment.
Will I actually drive?
Yes. Almost everyone drives on their first lesson, on quiet roads, moving off and stopping.
